With L-probes, the probe ball is at a 90° angle to the probe shaft. Due to their L-shape, they are particularly suitable for measuring undercuts in bores. Furthermore, L-probes can also be used for measuring points that are difficult to access (e.g. measuring on the underside of the workpiece). The stepped shaft has the advantage of a greater shaft thickness, which is reduced towards the probe element. This graduation increases the stability of the shaft while the length remains the same (depending on the ball diameter). At the same time, there is a reduction in the usable measuring length.
Ruby styli are the standard for almost all applications and are available in a wide variety of diameters. Another advantage is that ruby beads can be manufactured in very small diameters (from 0.12 mm). Ruby does, however, have weaknesses when it comes to continuous scanning of certain materials and surfaces. With extremely soft materials, e.g. aluminium, material from the workpiece can be deposited on the ruby surface (material build-up). Very hard and rough surfaces, e.g. castings, on the other hand, create abrasion on the ball (material removal). The shape of the ball changes as a result and loses accuracy. ZEISS uses carbide shafts for standard styli. These represent a good combination in terms of weight, rigidity and thermal length change.
Depending on the material of the stylus and the workpiece, wear or material build-up may occur.
